A South African Landscape

I was inspired by a beautiful photograph in a local magazine which captured the spectacular scenery near Scarborough.  http://goo.gl/maps/BgFE

The picture lay in my "inspiration" file for a while until I decided, a few weeks ago, to give it a whirl.

It's a pretty simple palette and I used loose brush strokes to depict the forms of clouds, rocks and foliage.

I painted with acrylics on a canvas covered board of 14" x 18" (about 35x45cm)

A suggestion about the care of your rings during Covid 19

During this time of Covid 19 I have been regularly sanitising my hands. Even the regular washing with soap has dried the skin of my hands out. So there has been a lot of moisturising as well. I’ve wondered how all of this has impacted my rings.   I thought about it for a while and, I’ve decided to lock my rings away for now. To be effective, most of our hand sanitisers are alcohol-based, or chlorine based. Could this be doing some harm to my jewellery?  Some organic minerals like amber, coral or pearls can be harmed as well as certain delicate semi-precious stones. Some metals can tarnish and if there is any, for eg. rodium plating, it could wear away.  So some of my favourite rings will come out after "lockdown", shining good as new after a quick clean with my, fit for purpose, jewellery cleaning cloth. (I might wear them all at once...lol!)

MOLDAVITE AND LARIMAR

I have found some beautiful pieces for the shop. Moldavite and Larimar are not as common as some of the other semi-precious stones used in jewellery. So when I'm curating I always get so excited by unusual finds. The two are very different from one another but each has an allure of it's own. Moldavite is a member of the Tektite group of natural glasses formed by interplanetary collisions. (The Greek word tektos, means "molten,"). Tektites are glassy mixtures of minerals with an amorphous crystal structure. Moldavite is a deep forest green and is the only variety suitable for cutting and faceting as a gem. Found only in the area previously known as Czechoslovakia, Moldavite is named for the Moldau River (called the Vltava in Czech). While scientists differ in theories regarding Moldavite's origin, nearly all agree its formation coincides with the crash of a large meteorite approximately 14.8 million years ago in what is now the Bohemian plateau.
