SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONES Sapphire is   the traditional September birthstone. The blue variety has been popular since the Middle Ages and, according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm.  Medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.  Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or purplish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue. The semi-precious variety of Sapphires consists mostly of the mineral corundum. Red corundum gems are rubies, and all other corundum shades are considered sapphires. The most popular and valuable sapphires are the traditional indigo-blue color, but sapphires come in many other colours, including white, yellow, orangy-pink, black and pink.
