SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONES

Sapphire is the traditional September birthstone. The blue variety has been popular since the Middle Ages and, according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm.  Medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.  Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or purplish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue.

The semi-precious variety of Sapphires consists mostly of the mineral corundum. Red corundum gems are rubies, and all other corundum shades are considered sapphires. The most popular and valuable sapphires are the traditional indigo-blue color, but sapphires come in many other colours, including white, yellow, orangy-pink, black and pink. The star sapphire is a variation of this precious gem. It contains an intersection of inclusions that yield the pattern of a six-pointed star on the surface of the stone.

Lapis Lazuli, a bright blue metamorphic rock consisting largely of lazurite, is the alternate modern birthstone for September. This stone is believed to enhance awareness and creativity. The gemstone's colour is arguably key to Lapis Lazuli's nameing as gemstone for September. Lapis Lazuli was also a zodiac stone for Libra, which falls partly in the month of September.

In India, Moonstone was the September birthstone, going as far back as the Ayurvedic or old Hindu calendar. Moonstone is composed of alternate layers of orthoclase and albite, which gives this September gemstone the look of glowing from within. This September stone is believed to relieve anxiety.
